MILTON HAMMERSLY A sharp jump in student ab sences at the Tiller-Drew Grade School was reported last week by Principal Argle Matthews as a round of communicable diseases began to take its toll. The season's first three cases of mumps, to gether with influenza and colds ac counted for most absentees. Last Monday saw 14 of the 93 students absent from classes, chalking up an absentee rate of 16 per cent, Matthews said. Gerald L. Rogers, electronics technician, has left for California to report for his new assignment at the San Diego Naval Base. He was recently transferred there from his former ship, the USS L. F. Mason, which has been sent to Boston for repairs. Mrs. Rogers, who was the former Carol Louise Peterman before their marriage at Tiller Feb. 10, is remaining at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Peterman of Tiller. Rogers is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Louie Rogers of Canyonville. Mr. and Mrs. Bob Booker of Steamboat Ranger Station were recent Sunday visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles L. Red ding at the Tiller Ranger Station. Miss Linda Johnson of Medford was weekend guest of Miss Car lens Anderson, who makes her home with her brother-in-law and sister, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Jack son at Drew. Miss Anderson works in the Cow Creek Ranger office. Roger Williams, forester with the Cow Creek Ranger District, spent Ginyonvillagers Rally With Aid To Family Burned Out In Fire By MRS. R. E. PROCTOR Things are looking up for the Jay Antij family who lost its po essions and home on Canyon Creek, Canyonville, in a fire dur ing January. Residents Give Aid Insurance money has made it possible for them to purchase a new home in Surprise Valley, off Gazley Road north of Canyonville. Friends, fellow townspeople, ac quaintances and many others hear ing of their plight showered the family with much-needed food, clothing and household goods. Mrs. A. B. LeBlanc is visiting her daughter and family, the Bill Barnes, of Silverton. Mrs. James Sproul of John Day came by plane to Roseburg in or der to spend the week with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Hoverson. She was joined by her husband Thursday and both at tended the posse convention at Grants Pass during the weekend. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Brusatorl of San Rafael, Cam., ' visited Mrs. June Jones during the weekend. Nurses' Aides Hired - Two new nurses aides at Forest Glen include Mrs. James Byford of Myrtle Creek and Mrs. Darius Hammond of Canyonville. DAVE THRUSH The Home Economics Club of the Camas Valley Grange met recent ly at the home of Mrs. Edgar Markham with the chairman, Mrs. Debbie Brown, presiding. Eight women wore present. 'Time' Cites U Of 0 The Honors College of the Uni versity of Oregon is cited as an example of honors efforts in an article in the education section of Time Magazine for February 15. The article states that Honors College such as those operated by the Unlvcristy of Oregon and "In effect. Ivy League campuses Within atatt universities." Ore. Tues., Feb. 26, 1963 four days recently as a patient in Roseburg's Mercy Hospital where he was placed in traction because of a back injury received at his home. He is now back at work. The previous week, Mr. and Mrs. Williams and twin daughters re turned after a six-week motor trip to Dallas, Tex., where they visited the former 8 parents, Mr. and Mrs. C. Earl Williams, and his 90-year old grandmother, Mrs. Hattie Wil Hams. His brother Wayne was home from his college studies in Rhode Island for a week during their stay. En route, the Williams family stopped in Huntsville, Tex as, to spend four days witn Mr. and Mrs. Bobby Murray and daughter who formerly resided at Tiller. Mrs. Raymond E. Clair has been at Lakeside for several weeks at the home of her stepfather and mother,' Mr. and Mrs. Earl Zenor, who were injured in an auto acci dent last December. Mrs. Zenor, most seriously injured, is reported to be recovering. Clair joined his wife at the Zenor home during the weekend when Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Norris of Tiller drove him over to the coastal town. Mr. and M r s. Charles Chevalier then made a trip to Lakeside to bring the Nor rises home. Mr. and Mrs. William R. God win made a recent business trip to Sacramento, Calif. During their absence, their three children, Jeanie, Billie and Richard, stay ed with a neighbor, Mrs. C. L. Ir win, and attended school. school librarian. While, here he at tended a Masonic officers' meeting at Glendale with Ed Wilkie and Charles Prudcn. News from Bernard Hyatt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Hyatt of Can yonville, notes that he has been graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a bachelor of sci ence degree in two majors, politi cal science and History. Hyatt underwent an emergency appendectomy at the end of the semester necessitating an extra research paper to rectify an in complete. He has now fuflilled all requirements. He Is expected home arouud March 1. ' Hyatt was graduated from Can yonville High School and served in the Navy before enrolling at Wisconsin. Flag Is Gift A flag, given to Forest Glen Senior Residence by Mr. and Mrs, Gordon Harry, was the focus of attention at the Valentine Day cel ebration of Oregon Day held in the residence auditorium. A Vanderanzen azalea plant with deep pink blooms was a val entine gift to senior residents giv en by George and Shirley Ginder of Gcorgshirl's Gift Shop in Can yonville. Mrs. Betty Howell and tier son, Jerry, from Medford were recent visitors of Mrs. Mary Brooke. The secretary reported the re cent silent auction as a success. Next meeting will be at the home of Mrs. Robert Cummings March 18 at 1:30 p.m. The Camas Valley Home Exten sion Unit held its last meeting at the home of Mrs. Eugene Banks, with ten women present. Mrs. Jer ry Dancer and Mrs. Eugene Banks gave a luncheon from demonstra tion materials. There was a discussion on the program for next year with Mrs. r rank Kinnan presiding. M r s. Wayman Schmidt and Mrs. Dwayno Hibbard were appointed leaders for the "care of hard floor coverings" project. Next meeting will feature "A Will of Our Own" to be given by County Extension Agent Mary Fletcher March 20 at the Metho dist Church. The public is invited to attend. Portlanders Visit Mr. and Mrs. Lester Bright and family of Portland visited recently at the home of Bl ight's brother and sister-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Ken neth Bright. Mr. and Mrs. Stanley Dancer and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Danc er, all of Granada. Calif., were re cent visitors in Camas Valley. They visited the Dancer boys father. Ray, who had been confined to Douglas Community Hospital for live weeks following an injury re coived in a wood3 accident. Dancer is now convalescing at home and is reported to be progressing satis lactoruy. Mrs. Ray Dancer and daughter, Judy, spent a day recently in Ash- land aiienuing to business. Language Laboratory Planned For Jo Lane This spring a language la bora tory is to be installed at Joseph Lane Jr. High for use of the for eign language classes. Six students booths and the teacher's master counsel unit will be installed, with six more student units to be installed next fall. Oth er materials include forty pre-recorded tapes and written material. With the arrival of this equip ment a great deal of emphasis will be placed on oral work, tapes, note books and audio-lingual matter. This is the modern approach to teaching languages. Patsy Wilson To Get Nurse's Cap Miss Patsy Wilson daughter of Mr. and Mr. Lewis Wilson of Oak land, will be receiving her nurse's cap at the Good Samaritan Hos pital School of Nursing Capping ceremony on March 15 in the Hos pital Chapel at Portland. The cap is given at the end of the first six months of the stu dent's schooling, signifying that she has successfully completed the pre-clinical period. Miss Lloydcna Grimes, Director, School of Nursing, assisted by Mrs. Carol Lawson, Nursing Instructor, will present the caps. The Reverend John W. Good year, Chaplain of Good Samaritan Hospital, will be officiating. Tankers Collide In Scheldt River FLUSHING, Holland (UPI)-A Panamanian tanker loaded with a cargo of crude oil collided with a British tanker in the Scheldt River Monday, turning both ves sels into flaming torches and block ing access to the giant Belgian port of Antwerp.' As many as 27 men may have died in the crash. The Panamanian vessel was the 20,776-ton Miraflores, and the Brit ish tanker was the 13,350-ton Ab adesa. The Miraflores had a full load of crude inbound from the Persian Gulf to Antwerp. The Ab adesa was outbound from Ant werp without cargo. Twenty-seven members of the Miraflores' 53-man crew were plucked from the freezing waters of the river, along with the Bel- seaman died after he was pulled out of the water. There was no immediate word on the missing crewmen, but most of the rescued men suffered se vere burns and shock. There was no word on the fate of the Abadcsa's crew. The busy Scheldt waterway which connects the port of Ant werp with the North Sea was transformed into a pool of flame by the collision, and all shipping on the stretch of river between Saaflingen and Baalheok was blocked. The pictures were furnished by the Northwest Federation of Mineralogical Soci eties. Gtms Displayed Everett Teater, program chair man, gave a talk on amethyst, the February birthstone. Members dis played faceted gems. Bert Allenby, manager of the Douglas County Fair, was present at the meeting and reported that all the requests made by Umpqua Mineral Club had been carried out in the plans for the Umpqua Gem and Mineral Show to be held in conjunction with the fair. Since the Fair presents only ribbons and cash prizes, the question was ask ed if the club could present special trophies at the show. Allenby in formed club members that the Fair Board would consider this a welcome addition to the show. An invitation was received from the Sweet Home Rock and Miner al Club to attend its show March 23 and 24 at the Union High School and also to present a dis play.
